Banned in Boston: Obey Shepard Fairey!

Unfortunately for the City of Boston, the legendary street artist Shepard Fairey pleaded guilty to three vandalism charges which included a deal that bans him from carrying stickers, posters, wheat paste, brushes, and other tools of the graffiti trade for two years. Ironically, the morning of his arrest, Boston Mayor Mumbles Menino shakes hands with Shepard at the unveiling of his ‘Peace Goddess’ banner that hung on the side of City Hall for months. Banned in Boston is a phrase that became famous during the 1920s when the Boston officials had the authority to ban works which they deemed to have ‘objectionable’ content. Many publishers actually sought to have their books banned in Boston because they knew the label would increase their sales in the rest of the country. I like to believe that Shepard pulled the wool over the Boston PD’s eyes and carefully crafted his arrest as a marketing strategy.

Feeling Followed by Faces in France

My journey around Metz, France was an eerie trip. I had this unnerving feeling of being followed. Too often street art is a vain attempt at self-promotion, so I appreciate a street artist who does not leave a signature with their work. I do not know the ‘handle’ of the artist responsible for these awesome stickers that are everywhere around the city, but I loved discovering new faces. I wonder how many sets of eyes spied me without me seeing them…

Finding graffiti in Australia is not a hard task. It is celebrated all over the country as a legitimate art form by many people. Businesses use graffiti as a tool to sell everything from music to pizza to haircuts. My trip to Byron Bay was no exception.

Hello Heidelberg!

My brief visit to Heidelberg was filled with awe over my first glance at real European city. Being from America, our ‘old’ buildings are new by comparison. During the 30s and 40s Heidelberg was a stronghold of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (the Nazi regime), but the city escaped Allied bombing because it was neither an industrial center or transportation hub, and there was really nothing worth blowing up in Heidelberg. I found little little graffiti around, but there was plenty of street art to be discovered.

I stumbled onto this sticker around the corner from the local Absinthe store. In the context of the situation, it made me laugh.

ROAD TRIP ON THE AUTOBAHN!

The say the best way to learn is by trial and error. My European vacation has taught me a lot about photographing graffiti cruising by walls at Autobahn speeds. So for the photographers out there, remember that you need a fast shutter speed, decent depth of field and don’t forget about pushing your ISO! I promise that in the image quality will improve as my trip progresses.
